Maku’u Farmer’s Market

This is a market you don’t want to miss. It is open every Sunday from 8:00 AM to around 2:00 PM. It is the event of the week in Puna. It is a gathering place to talk story with friends and neighbors besides being a great place to stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables. But it is so much more. There is music. Each week there is a featured performer that keeps things alive under the music tarp. In addition to that there is often performers at other places around the market to keep you entertained. There is always a good variety of food vendors that have ono food to try. One of the most in demand vendors makes a fresh papaya salad just for you. You can tell where she’s located because she always has the longest line. There is also some great hawaiian smoked meats and barbeque and if your in the mood, some of the most imaginative crepes that you will devour with relish.
At this market you can get some great buys on live plants to put in your garden and loads of free advice from the growers that know how to grow in the Puna lava/cinder/soil. You can also get some great buys on all sorts of hand made crafts and flea market items. Need a massage? Try a lomi lomi massage, you won’t be disappointed. Need adivce? Try the tarot card reader.
But the biggest reason for going to the Sunday market is for the people. This has to be one of the best places to people watch that you will ever find. Saying it’s colorful just doesn’t capture the crowd. You will find the true “punatics” here, the back to the earth crowd, the pierced, the tatooed, the newly arrived, your next door neighbors and in short the heart and soul of Puna.
