Calley O ‘Neill–An artist for all seasons

calley-stained-glass.jpgThe Big Island’s Calley O ‘Neill is a highly respected public artist, mural painter, yoga/meditation teacher and pioneer in ecological landscape and community design. Critics have described O’Neill’s are as “ethnovisionary”, “dynamic” and “breathtaking”. “Her art, which spans three decades, finds expression in easel painting and public works: stunning murals and landscape designs. In these, her planetary vision is incorporated into ecological fine art that stands on its own merits, and also serves the purpose of nourishing the earth and healing its inhabitants.”

Calley has a broad range of creative experience including the design and construction of healing, herb, and meditaion gardens, edible landscapes, mosaics, painted and relief murals, stained glass and mandalas. She is well known for her cermonial work, especially weddings. Her passion is transformation and deep healing… “making paradise paradise again.”

Her teaching and art speak to human evolution and the transformation of mundane spaces into beauty. Calley accepts commissions in Hawai’i and abroad. She teaches seaside yoga, meditation, art, vision, fitness and WaterRhythmics at The Orchid on The Big Island of Hawai’i. Calley has touched the lives of thousands of students in intimate ways, that have for many years established a profound shift in their consciousness, health and their life. Through her practice and teaching of sacred art, flowing yoga and mind/body integration, a compassionate healing yoga has evolved, called The Full Body Elixir.

This work has been key to Calley’s profound shift from an A type striver in pain to a joyous, peaceful seeker on an ascendant path of healing and spiritual evolution.

I have taken classes over the years with her, there is nothing like coming out of a meditation right as the sun is setting in the ocean.

You can visit her web site like many of our owners and guests have enjoyed.    www.CalleyO’Neill.com

Puako Community Association

gary-sunset-king.JPGWe would like to give a big “Thank you!” to Rob Shallenberger for all the great work and effort he has contributed as president of the PCA in Puako.  Copied below from the January 2009 Puako Community Association.

“I leave this position with mixed feelings. On the plus side, my association with the Board members has been good fun. I’ve also been impressed by the folks, on and off Board, who have donated their spare time (and, frankly, their money) to better this community. With this support , we have made good progress on a growing list of community projects, some of which have been extraordinarily complex and time consuming. That being said, I’m also frustrated by the fact that we have barely scratched the surface in our efforts to encourage meaningful community involvement amongst the many other full and part time residents in Puako. There is so much, as yet, untapped talent and experience in this community. Think what we could accomplish if everyone on the street found a way to chip in. Awesome!”

Now that Rob is moving on , Peter Hackstedde will be the new President of the association. We appreciate all of the effort put forth by the Puako association.  We will be posting new projects as they take shape over the upcoming year.

Mauna Kea Resort open again.

f2-007.jpgWhen Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is opening again. The hotel first opened in July of 1965, Mr. Laurance S. Rockefeller surprised the travel industry in many ways.  Not only did he contstruct a luxurious retreat for privileged few on an all-but-unheard of tropical island, he paid more for it than any other hotel ever built (15 million). The architectural firm Skidmore Owings Merrill juxtaposed elements of modern, geometrical western design with the understated “shibumi” (essential) elements of the East.

The golf designer , Robert Trent Jones, Sr. created a course by crushing the barren lava  rock into soil, and decorators Davis Allen and Phyllis Brownlee filled the guestrooms, dining rooms and public spaces with the finest furnishings and appointments money could buy. Remarkably, this included over 1,600 pieces of authentic Pacific and Asian artworks and artifacts.   By Catherine Bridges Tarleton– from the self guided tour.

Mauna Kea Resort is only a 5 minute drive from Puako. Glad to have our neighbors back.

How do we prevent WNV?

The West Nile Virus? How can we prevent it?

Eliminate Standing Water. Of course Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, with all the winter rains we are experiencing we should start to look around to make sure we are not creating places for them to regenerate.

1. Remove anything that collects rainwater, such as cans, bottles, buckets, used tires, flowerpots, abandoned cars and boats.

2. Clean clogged roof gutters.

3. Cover garbage cans, uncapped hollow tile walls and fence pipes.

4. Empty and clean watering containers for pets and livestock at least once a week.

5. Check your screen doors and windows for rips and tears..and fix them.

6. Clean out flower vases and replace the water.

7. Spray mosquitoes with aerosol insecticides labeled for flying insects.
