Puako is still the only ocean front residential community along the Kohala Coast

Puako is still the only ocean front residential community along the Gold Coast/Kohala Coast of the Big Island nestled between the Mauna Lani Resort, Fairmont Orchid and Mauna Kea/Hapuna Resorts. Hapuna Beach State Park has earned the reputation of being one of Hawaii Island’s finest beaches. It is the largest White Sands Beach on The Big Island and consistently rates on Top Ten lists internationally. Hapuna Beach offers some wonderful opportunities for swimming, bodysurfing, bodyboarding, sunbathing and snorkeling and is just a mile from Puako. You can even drive the back road to Hapuna Beach and not get on the Highway. Local shore fisherman can be seen daily enjoying the great reef fishing.

From this ariel shot you can view the coast line of Puako and the extensive protected coral reef

Puako Beach Drive has no thorough thru access which keeps it virtually still undiscovered by many. Hawaii Vacation Rentals, Inc. had their office next to the Puako General Store for almost 20 years and we often noticed people driving down the road and turning around before ever seeing the charming neighborhood which is still prevalent with original beach shacks next to stately homes as well as charming beach cottages that some owner’s have preserved. There are homes along the ocean side as well as across the street from the ocean. There are six separate “beach” accesses along this stretch of beach. Although there is not a tremendous amount of sand, there are tide pools and the extensive protected reef is remarkable. During low tide, small pools dot the entire coastline and these pools are filled with small sea life that make excellent areas to explore for all ages. If you enjoy shore diving, kayaking and snorkeling you can find a spot along this stretch of shoreline to enter the water. Offshore the reef is home to a wide variety of fish and many days you will see dolphins playing right from the shore. Enjoy the Whales who return each year to mate and give birth in the tropical warm waters during the winter months.

Puako is a place of activity and rejuvenation. There is so much to do or nothing at all. Sunsets are celebrated by most who live and visit Puako every evening.

Warmest Aloha,

Pattie

General Weather Patterns of Hawai’i

GENERAL WEATHER PATTERNS:

The best thing about Hawai’i's weather is that it is very localized. You may be driving along the island and be in a rain storm one minute and in bright sun the next. This variety of weather allows you to fully experience Hawai’i and its sun-drenched beaches, misty rainbow-filled valleys, pristine waterfalls, cool highlands, and lush mountains. The chart seen to the right here shows the distribution of precipitation annually on the islands; click the chart to enlarge it.

Hawaii, like all the other major Hawaiian islands, is affected by the trade winds. These winds blow NE to ENE and are typically more prevalent in the winter months. These trade winds bring cool air to the islands from the north, often resulting in precipitation along mauka and windward areas. At times, these winds can die down and practically reverse so that a south wind blows over the islands, resulting in very hot and muggy conditions. These winds are called Kona winds.

One mistake a lot of people make when they visit Hawai’i is assuming there is a wet and/or dry season like back home, but it’s not quite that simple. Granted, there are two distinct times of year and weather patterns due to the trade winds, but there is no defined “rainy season.” The general point to be made is, you can’t just say it’s rainy in the winter and dry in the summer. We’ve seen it bone dry in the winter, and had flooding in the summer; each enough times to derail most short-term trends. Still, we can look at the long term trends and get a general idea of what to expect. Let’s take a look.

Relax and read a book on your Hawaiian Pune’e

In Hawaii with our relaxed lifestyle, one piece of furniture that many of us love to have in our homes is called a Pune’e which is a moveable couch or bed seen in corners of living rooms, on the lanai or covered porch and other rooms of the home. The pune’e was originally a stack of lauhala mats used by Native Hawaiians for sleeping or lounging in grass houses. Today, Pune’e’s are used as extra sleeping areas as well as lounging and napping during the day. They are often created from single or double beds with lots of pillows or bolsters added for comfort and support. Some are simply set on the floor, while others are more intricate with built in support from a platform made from bamboo, teak or other exotic materials. In Hawaii we have had a trend toward Indonesian furniture for a rustic, tropical look so some of the current day pune’e’s may have intricate carvings and be higher off the floor. However they are made, simple to luxurious, a Pune’e is one of the most inviting places to curl up with a good book and look out at the Pacific Ocean and relax. The multitude of colorful or designer pillows invites anyone to take a deep breath and relax to enjoy our “Hawaii Life”

Memorial Day on May 30th, 2011

Memorial Day 2011 is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 30 in 2011). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War. It was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars. Pearl Harbor will be very busy this year as usual.

Memorial Day often marks the start of the summer vacation season, and Labor Day its end.
Begun as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the Civil War, by the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as ordinary people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family get-togethers, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held since 1911 on Memorial Day.
Memorial Day 2011 is on 30th May in 2011.
