Hanalei Valley Hike Update

Back on 6-27-2007 I shared the beautiful hike in Hanalei Valley. At that time, I’d hiked in just a little over a mile to what I later found out was a ship navigational coordinate which is located atop on of the knolls. You’ll see it when you get there. It’s a round metal stake in the ground.

Last week I went to the end of the trail and I must say, it is awesome. If you like endless views this is the hike for you. The total hike is probably about 2 miles in if you go to the left at the split. If you go to the right, you’ll see some ropes which enable you to get down the short drop. This trail apparently continues on and takes you up the face of one of the peaks– or so I am told. That hike will have to wait for dryer weather.

The views are pretty phenomenal all the way up, but at the top you can see all of Hanalei Bay, Bali Hai, the Princeville Hotel, all of Princeville, down the coastline to the Kilauea lighthouse and much further down the coastline. What was even more spectacular is that this vantage point puts you in line to look right down Hanalei Valley and the Hanalei River as it runs back through the mountains paralleling Power line trail. Power line trail is so named for the Power line towers. This trail runs from the top of Kapaka road in Princeville down to the arboretum in Kapaa. (More on this trail another day.) The trail is well inland and does not afford much opportunity to actually look down into the Hanalei Valley floor which is exactly what you get to see as you look over mauka side from this fabulous vantage point. I took some pictures but they hardly do the magnificence any justice. The light was soft and the day slightly overcast, which was great for hiking but not so great for photos.

I’ve included several photos for your viewing pleasure. Also keep an eye out for the apple guava which are about the size of a large bing cherry and are a nice solid red when ripe. These are quite edible and very tasty. Just be careful you don’t try to bite down on one of the many seeds and make sure there are no holes in the fruit before eating it!

This trail is seriously uphill with just one or two downhill portions so bring water and be prepared for sore muscles the next day if you are not that active. Have fun!

Very cool! I thought about taking that hike, but I went ahead and did the Honopu valley trail. The trailhead is on one of the last (if not the last) over 90 degree turns heading up to the Kalalau Lookout.

Unfortunately, pictures never do Kauai justice :)
