SPACE SHUTTLE LAUNCH – June 8, 07
FLORIDA’S SPACE COAST NEVER TIRES of perfect launches. Moments ago I snapped this photo as Atlantis rocketed toward outer space. I cannot watch a launch without tears. I hold our breath until the solid rocket boosters fall away.
THE ONLY THING MORE IMPRESSIVE THAN the a Space Shuttle rising out of a ball of fire then shooting skyward is the sound. The Shuttle is well away from the launch pad before the first vibrations reach us. They roll across the cities surrounding the Space Center rattling every window. Then the sound washes over you and it is amazing.
UNTIL THE SHUTTLE RETURNS people all across Brevard County Florida will tune in to see the progress of this mission. Most of us will have a pretty good idea when the mission will be over. Then one day – or night – two big sonic booms will announce the Atlantis return. The tourists will say, “What was that?” The locals will just smile that thank god another shuttle returned safely. There will only be 15 missions and in 2010 the shuttle program will end.
YOU MAY ALREADY KNOW I live a double life. We came to Kona from Brevard County – known as Florida’s Space Coast because we are adjacent to Kennedy Space Center.
