BIG ISLAND DIVING – Here’s What We Missed!

Male Whitley’s Box Fish
A MALE WHITLEY’S BOXFISH is a rare sighting on the Kona side of the Big Island, so I can tell you I am really disappointed that I was not there to see this one. I want to send a special thank you to Bruce Malasky for showing us just what those unfortunates, like myself, who are currently off island are missing. I’ve only seen one of these beauties. We often see the females. They are larger with white sides. When you see a male, you know it. That blue is just astonishing. You might notice that Bruce is not sharing the name of the Dive Site. We wouldn’t want this rare beauty to end up in some collector’s private tank. There are so few of these that the loss of one or two males could deplete the species. So what else did we miss this week?

Devil Scorpion
LOOKING DOWN THE TROAT OF A DEVIL Scorpionfish is not an everyday occurrence. They tend to be very still whenever divers are around, counting on their wonderful camouflage to make you pass them by. Pete watched Bruce take these photos. He said this one was sort of aggressive – actually swimming toward Bruce at each camera flash. Since the sting of the spines can be dangerous Bruce gave the Devil as much ground as he wanted.
