BAD PHOTOGRAPHY? NO! Good Camouflage

CAN YOU FIND THE FISH in this photo? Look closely! Sometimes after the dive is over, I wonder what was right under my nose that I never saw. This came from another diver on a JDL (Jack’s Diving Locker) trip we made last month.
Joyce,
I was on the April 18th and April 14th trip with you and your husband. You took a couple of pictures with my camera on the 14th, one of which is included. I’m not sure what happened to the others. I also included the better pictures from the second dive on 4/18 when you forgot your camera. I’m sorry this took so long. I am awful at identifying fish, but the fish in numbers 077, 078 and 079 was pointed out to me by you. I think it’s either a scorpion fish or a rock fish. I’m probably wrong with both of those guesses, but I like the pictures….
I hope all is well with you and you are still in Hawaii. I wish I was still there.
Aloha,
Chris

HERE’S A BETTER LOOK thanks to Chris, who by the way, is a great diver.
THE SCORPION FISH IS GREAT! It is either a Devil Scorpion fish or a Titan Scorpion fish. They are from the same family as the Hawaiian Turkey fish and Hawaiian Lion fish we saw the same day. They are also called Rock fish or Stone fish and from that name came the hand signal that must have originated with an old hippy diver. The biologist/diver who wrote “Touch the Sea” insisted their aim in life is to mimic a rock. She describes how to hold one on your hand but beware, they are highly poisonous so I don’t recommend it.
I AM SURE THERE IS SOMEONE out there can tell us exactly which Scorpion fish it is. I could not see it well enough from the angle to tell if there was a hump on the back, but I thought the mouth looked quite large and it was neither as large or as colorful as Titans I’ve seen.
I AM NOT IN THE HABIT of using other people’s cameras. It just happened that Chris and I had the same camera in the same housing.
JUST BELOW HOKULI`A GOLF COMMUNITY at a dive site called Driftwood is where these shots were taken. My husband, Pete, and I usually dive with Jack’s Diving Locker on Wend. or Saturday’s. Call 808-329-7585 to book your trip. See you on the boat soon.
