Paradise Pinnacle – Pipefish
DIVE DAY AT LAST: Captain Roger gave permission to board the Jack’s Diving Locker boat, Na Pali Kai, around 9am Saturday morning for a two tank advanced dive. So much for an early start – but no worries, that is 8am Hawaiian time and today was for fun. Besides, on advanced trips we get extra food. We traveled South along the Kona coast of the Big Island to a spot just below Kona Paradise Subdivision.
REDSTRIPE PIPEFISH: Group One dropped into the water and began to inspect the pukas in the pinnacle at about 50 feet. Almost at once we noticed two Redstripe Pipefish. Like seahorses, male pipefish carry and incubate their eggs. I’ve been told younger divers can actually see the eggs.
A DWARF MORAY rewarded me with a visit near the end of the dive. When he popped out from behind a black urchin, I’m not sure who was more surprised, me or the eel. Cute little guy with big blue eyes, he was actually the first Dwarf Moray puhi I’ve found out of his hole puka. He slid past a whip coral and was gone. I’ve noticed they always seem to have a home with a back door but I couldn’t spot it.
DRAGON WRASSE AT HENRY’S REEF, the last stop of the day. The site was named for an eel that used to hang out at the mouth of a nice swim through cave. Henry eventually gave birth and was re-named but the site is still known as Henry’s. The first divers at the cave saw a white tip reef shark. We found the baby Rockmover, AKA Dragon Wrasse, just outside the mouth of the cave. They usually hang out above the sand near a rock or small coral head. They disguise themselves as a piece of seaweed or trash drifting back and to with the surge. The adults are amazing to watch too. I’ll see if I can get a photo of them next week.
Please feel free to send questions and to share your diving experiences and photos.
