Stodgy Old Men, Right?

NOT – I have been a member of THE ROTARY CLUB OF NORTH KOHALA for about ten years and it’s anything but stodgy and we have a good mix both age-wise and genderly (is that a word?) speaking. From the very first meeting I attended as a guest of my friend Sheila (who served on the local credit union loan committee with me), I knew it was something different. And I admit, I harbored the same sort of opinion about Rotary -puffed up old foggies with nothing better to do.

WAS I WRONG! It was the most entertaining business meeting I’d ever attended. More accurately it was a combination of entertaining and informative. I learned that the club like all Rotary clubs, met once a week at the same time and place every week, usually a luncheon meeting, but not always. The meeting actually started and ended on time (now there’s a concept) and though it had structure, it was genuinely fun.

I learned that Rotary is the LARGEST SERVICE ORGANIZATION IN THE WORLD – and GIVES MORE SCHOLARSHIPS WORLDWIDE than any other organization! Another thing I really liked was the meeting format. Each person in the club is responsible for sponsoring a speaker on a rotating basis for the weekly meetings. The speakers vary widely from professional hockey players (this at a make-up meeting I once attended in Calgary) to the likes of Earl Bakken a member of our own club!
You may not know that Dr. Bakken was the developer of the very first pace-maker among many, many other inventions and the main impetus behind the fabulous Heart Brain Center at North Hawaii Community Hospital, but you would have learned all about it at our meeting.

Rotary is known for tackling large and small projects around the world and in local communities such as providing access to clean water, taking on illiteracy and eradicating polio, all building bridges to world peace. It’s an organization WHERE YOU FEEL VERY COMFORTABLE DONATING YOUR TIME AND MONEY, and it’s a great way to meet people if you’re moving to the Big Island!

    Mike :

I’m on the Big Island for a week and wishing to visit a local Rotary Club…I’m the Prez Elect of my club back on Bainbridge Island, in Washington state just off shore from Seattle. When/where does your club meet ?

I’m also a 40 year veteran of your business, only with a focus on the investment side.
