About this Blog

After “aloha” and “mahalo”, the next Hawaiian words you should learn if you are looking at real estate on the Big Island are “makai” and “mauka”. Makai means “towards the ocean” and mauka means “towards the mountains”. If you have trouble remembering which is which, one hint is that the “mau” sound of mauka sounds like the “mou” of “mountain”. And you will see the word kai or ocean in a lot of names of communities and properties in the Kohala Coast Resorts, because the resorts are (mostly) makai of the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway (Highway 19) that runs north from the Kona Airport. Hence the name of my blog: Mostly Makai.

My intention is to do two things with this blog. I plan to mostly cover the three Kohala Coast Resorts: Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani and Waikoloa Beach Resort. There are other bloggers in the network with more focus on Hualalai, the North Kona resort you would pass between the Kona airport and the Kohala Coast Resorts. I feel about the three as a mother does about her children: they each have their own personality and quirks, and I’m fond of all of them. So my first objective is to help my readers get a sense of what makes each one special, in case you haven’t yet found which one is where you feel most at home.

My second objective is to provide timely news and insight into the real estate market and opportunities at the resorts. To make my life simpler, and to make it easier for readers who have already chosen their favorite spot in the sun, I’m planning to write on a schedule. The first week of each month will be more general posts, local color, or perhaps an area like Puako that lies between the official resorts. The second week will belong to Mauna Kea, the grande dame of the three. The third week of the month will be for Mauna Lani, and the fourth for the Waikoloa Beach Resort. So if you want to follow just one of the resorts, set a recurrent task in your electronic device of choice (or your photo wall calendar of Hawaii) to check in each month.

And of course you can always just contact me directly if you’d like me to answer a question or keep an eye out for the particular home of your dreams.

Aloha,

Beth Thoma Robinson R (S)
