The Hawaiian Language is a very beautiful language. When visiting the Hawaiian Islands, it can be a bit confusing, so here are some basic facts about the language to assist you in pronouncing the names and/or places you are visiting.

The Hawaiian Language only has seven (7) Consonants:

p, k, h, l, m, n, and w

When the “w” is after “i” and “e”, it is pronounced like a “v”

When the “w” is after “u” and “o”, it is pronounced like a “w”

One of the punctuations may throw you, but it is pretty easy.

If you see ‘ between letters, it is a glottal stop, similar to the sound between the oh’s as in oh-oh.

Vowels:

A sounds like the a in above

E sounds like the e in bet, if it is marked with a macron, it is pronounced like ay as in pay

I sounds like the y in city, if it is marked with a macron, it is pronounced like ee as in see

O sounds like the o in solo, if it is marked with a macron, it is pronounced like o in sole

U sounds like the oo in moon

With the onset of summer upon us, Kauai is already bustling with activity.

Saturday, May 2, 2009 was the “Kaua’i Loves You” triathlon. The event was held at Kalapaki Bay in Lihue and was hosted by Swim Kauai Aquatics. It involved a half-mile swim in Kalapaki Bay, a 12-mile bike ride around the Menehune Fishpond area and a 5K run through the Marriott property. A heart felt congratulations go out to Leo McCarthy who finished first, our own Lois Lutz who won the women’s division and to all of the other 78 participants of this wonderful event! Here are some up and coming events:

3^rd Annual Hanalei Open Water Swim ~ This event is a fundraiser hosted by the Namolokama O’ Hanalei Canoe Club. It will take place on July 25, 2009 at 9:00 am at the Hanalei Pier. There are various divisions for this event; for more information or to sign up, please visit www.namolokama.com.

1^st Annual Kauai Marathon ~ This inaugural event will take place at Poipu Beach and starts at 5:30 am. You can participate in the half or full marathon. For more information or to register for this event, please visit www.kauaimarathon.com.

Canoe Paddling ~ There are two canoe clubs on the North Shore. One is the Hanalei Canoe Club (www.hanaleicanoeclub.com) and the other is the Namolokama O’ Hanalei Canoe Club (www.namolokama.com). Both have Men’s, Women’s and Youth programs available and have various fundraisers throughout the year. If you are a visitor and want to just try it out, contact them and they will be more than happy to accommodate you.

The county of Kauai has posted some approvals of TVR permits for vacation rental properties located outside of the VDA (Visitor’s Destination Area).

Two of my listings that are very successful vacation rentals have received approval for their permits.

Update on the Transient Vacation Rental program on the island of Kauai March 17, 2009

Many Hanalei homes were inspected this past week for their compliance to the new Ordinance. Even though the homes have been inspected, there is still an additional hoop to jump through.

According to the most recent revision of the Ordinance, a Transient Vacation Rental Affidavit must be completed by the Single Family Vacation Rental owner OUTSIDE the VDA. This affidavit must be notarized and received by the County no later than March 30, 2009. You can obtain a copy of this affidavit by visiting www.kauai.org.

Results of the inspections can also be found on this website under Transient Vacation Rental Registration. It is unknown as to whether these results will be posted any sooner than 30 days out from the date of inspection, so keep checking the website.

Also check out the price reduction on my Poipu Kapili listing. The MLS number is 220956. This property is situated in the VDA and is a very popular vacation rental. This 1,170 square foot condo is well appointed and is located in a small private resort whose acres of manicured grounds are across from the ocean.
