Big surf and sadness hits the island of Kauai November 2, 2010

Yesterday was the beginning of the largest swell of the winter season so far.  Today, the North Shore of Kauai was rocked with 25 plus foot waves today.  This winter swell prompted our island’s tow-in surfers to flock to their favorite surf spots today and put on a fabulous show for friends and tourists alike.  The swell is expected to stay for a few more days.

Also, today, Kauai lost a true treasure!  Andy Irons has surfed the North Shore of Kauai all of his life and had such great talent that it carried him to three World Championship titles.  Andy died today reportedly from Dengue Fever.  He was in Puerto Rico and due to his illness, had to pull out of the Rip Curl event there to come home and get better.  Andy is a beloved son of Kauai and you can feel the heavy heart of every single islander.  Our condolences go out to his Ohana, his beautiful wife Lyndie who is pregnant with their son, and everyone that he touched.  He will truly be missed!
