This weekend I participated in the Great Aloha Run on Oahu with an associate of mine, Ruth Marvin. This event is an annual fundraiser for various charities statewide with over 25,000 participants. The event is an 8 mile run/walk that begins along the Nimitz Highway and ends at Aloha Stadium. Congratulations to everyone that ran or walked this wonderful event. Now let’s run/walk back to the Garden Isle…..
Kauai is home to some of the rarest and most unique plants in the world. Alvin “Bino” Castelo wants to see more of them in our gardens and landscaping. On January 31 at the Hanalei School cafeteria, Bino of the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Limahuli Valley in Haena shared his expertise to some 30 interested residents. Eight topics from ground covers to weed management were covered to promote more planting of native species. The 1 & 1/2 hour presentation was followed by “talk story” around dozens of potted Hawaiian plant specimens. You can get further information by calling the National Tropical Botanical Garden at 808-742-2623.

What Zone Are You In? February 8, 2008

There are several types of zoning in the town of Hanalei. Most of the beachfront parcels in Hanalei Bay are zoned “Open” which helps to protect the beauty of our beachfront. The balance of Hanalei’s properties are zoned “Residential” with a sprinkling of “Agriculture” zoned parcels. Then there is the “Music” zone…..
Several of Hanalei’s restaurants support the local musical talents of people like Angela Rose with Joe LaMore, Vito Trulligo, Matt Bolton and various artists that play Hawaiian music. Whatever zone you want to be in, Hanalei has it available and I am here to assist you.

The Vacation Rental Ordinance and its effect on Hanalei Owners and Returning Guests February 1, 2008

The Transient Vacation Rental Bill #2204 that has been in the making for eight years is finally only the Mayor’s signature away from becoming a reality. Here are some key points on the Ordinance:
* Existing single family vacation rentals outside the VDA (Visitor’s Destination Area) will be grandfathered.
* The right to vacation rent will run with the land.
* The section on Agriculture TVRs was taken out.
* Registration will begin after the forms are ready March 1 and needs to be completed by October 15, 2008 and then ANNUALLY renewed.
* For renewal the single family vacation rental has to be rented 30 days per year.
* There will be no new single family vacation rentals outside of the VDA.
Provided there are no further changes to this bill, this is a very good thing for Hanalei!!!
